Pumping System Assessment Tool (PSAT) Specialist Qualification

Event Details:

Pumping System Assessment Tool (PSAT) Specialist Qualification 3-Day Workshop

Qualified PSAT Specialists have successfully completed classroom and practical training, passed a rigorous exam, and demonstrated their ability to use the PSAT software tool.

Specialists apply this tool to help their plant or industrial customers identify ways to improve pumping system efficiency. The U.S. DOE recognizes these industry professionals as Qualified Specialists, but does not specifically endorse any individual or company.

Become a Pumping System Assessment Tool Qualified Specialist

Earn recognition as a qualified pump system specialist in the use of DOE's Pumping System Assessment Tool (PSAT) software by attending a qualification workshop.

PSAT helps users assess energy savings opportunities in pumping systems, relying on field measurements of flow rate, head, and either motor power or current to perform the assessment. Using algorithms from Hydraulic Institute standards and motor performance characteristics from DOE's MotorMaster+ database, PSAT quickly estimates existing pump and motor efficiency and calculates the potential energy and cost savings of a system optimized to work at peak efficiency.

Demand is high for the software and training, and continues to grow. To meet the demand, and increase the number of PSAT experts to assist end users, DOE is working with the pumping industry and the Hydraulic Institute, to train and qualify experts in the use of PSAT. The qualifying workshops prepare professionals with extensive experience in pumping systems to use PSAT in their system assessments. Participants learn:

  • How to accurately acquire input data for PSAT
  • How to prescreen pumping systems to select the "vital" systems for further review
  • How to use the PSAT software
  • The difference between measurements and requirements
  • The importance of a system perspective

Quality and Environmental Improvement

Gage R&R

Event Details:

Measurement is about documenting your current process, validating how it is measured, and assessing baseline performance. In our one-day workshop, we’ll focus on three measurement tools: gage R & R, control charts, and process capability. Gage R & R (Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility) is the amount of measure variation introduced by a measurement system, i.e., the measuring instrument itself and the individual using the instrument.

A Gage R & R study quantifies repeatability (variation from the instrument), reproducibility (variation from the individual), and overall gage R & R (the combined effect of the two.) Control charting is a tool you use to monitor processes and to assure that they remain “in control” or stable. These charts help distinguish process variation due to common causes from those due to special causes. And the purpose of a process capability study is to allow you to compare the process specification to the process output and determine if the process can meet your customer’s specification. A capable process is stable (not changing) and can fit within the customer’s specification with a little extra room to spare.

Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Combo

Event Details:

GD&T is the international language used on engineering drawings to accurately describe the size, form, orientation, and location of part features. Additionally it is also a design dimensioning philosophy that encourages designers to define a part based on how it functions in the final product or assembly.

GD&T is an exact language that enables design engineers to "say what they mean" on a drawing. Process engineers and manufacturing use the language to interpret the design intent and to determine the best manufacturing approach. Quality control and inspection use the GD&T language to determine proper set-up and part verification.

TWI Overview – A Learn-by-Doing Program
Learn how to leverage the role of your supervisors & team leaders!

Developed in the U.S. during WWII to train replacements of an industrial workforce who were off fighting a war, Training Within Industry (TWI) provided rapid and consistent training and is recognized as part of what helped the Allied forces secure victory. TWI was an unqualified success . . . but became a faded memory in the U.S. after the war.

But thankfully TWI experienced a comeback, and has become a critical connection with lean!  In The Toyota Way, Jeffrey Liker references “going to the source”, “observing detail” and “learning by doing.”  These are all influenced by TWI, and became the backbone of Toyota’s standardized philosophy.  Standardized work = a cooperative effort between the foreman and the worker.  And in support of the supervisor, TWI is the training choice for “strict adherence to standardized operations for new employee training.”

TWI training consists of four standardized modules:

1.       Job Relations Training (JR): builds positive employee relations, increases cooperation and motivation, and how to effectively resolve conflicts.

2.       Job Instruction Training (JI):  quickly training employees to do a job correctly, safely, and conscientiously.

3.       Job Methods Training (JM): improving the way jobs are done for continual improvement

4.       Job Safety Training (JS): creating a safe workplace

And the bottom-line benefits?  Production people accept responsibility for their work, participate in the improvement process, learn how to interact as part of a team, and increase their level of job satisfaction.

Training Within Industry – critical to sustaining “lean” AND maintaining Continuous Improvement momentum.  And luckily, it’s never too late to incorporate this valuable tool into your program!
